Product design meets feline chaos

Design Choices From the Stoned Cats Testing Team

Every Stoned Cats toy is shaped by real-world testing, careful safety choices, and a very determined quality assurance team with claws.

The first prototype

The catnip pocket idea

At first, our rescued plushie toys were going to include a small catnip pocket sealed with hook-and-loop fastener. The idea was simple: open the pocket, add fresh catnip, close it up, and let the cat enjoy a refreshed toy.

On paper, it looked like a smart reusable design. Then the prototypes went into live testing.

Reality check

Cats had other plans

Once the volunteer test subjects were exposed to the toys, the pocket system failed within the hour. The cats worked the closure open, extracted the catnip, and proved that any weak point in a toy will be discovered immediately.

Safety first

Why we rejected stronger fasteners

๐Ÿงท

Snaps

Snaps could hold better than Velcro-style closures, but hard pieces may be unsafe if a cat chews or bites down during play.

๐Ÿงฅ

Zippers

Zippers add metal or hard plastic parts. That may create tooth, mouth, or chewing hazards for cats that attack toys with enthusiasm.

๐Ÿงต

Heavy closures

Stronger closures solved one problem but introduced another. We decided the safest choice was to remove the refill pocket entirely.

The Stoned Cats Signature Herbal Blend/p>

catnip, silver vine, valerian root, and Tatarian honeysuckle

The Stoned Cats herbal blend is designed around the idea that no single plant affects every cat the same way. Each botanical contributes different naturally occurring compounds that interact with a cat's sensory system in unique ways. Catnip provides nepetalactones, which many cats find highly stimulating, while silver vine contains actinidine and related compounds that can affect many cats that do not respond to catnip alone. Valerian root adds a different set of aromatic compounds that some cats find especially attractive, and Tatarian honeysuckle wood offers additional natural compounds that can trigger playful behavior in cats that ignore the other herbs. By combining all four botanicals, the blend reaches the widest range of cats while providing a richer and more complex scent profile than any single ingredient alone. The goal is not simply to make the blend stronger, but to create a balanced formula where each plant complements the others, giving more cats a reason to play, explore, and stay active.

The final design

Built for safer, longer-lasting feline entertainment

The final Stoned Cats design avoids hard fasteners, removes easy-to-open catnip compartments, and uses a refreshable scent system instead. The result is a softer, safer, longer-lasting toy that can be renewed without adding zippers, snaps, or loose catnip pockets.
